In 1978, the city of New York forcibly removed the political collectives that founded the People’s Detox Program at Lincoln Hospital. Why was this revolutionary health program a target of city and state officials for shutdown? What continued for 30 more years after the month-long closure of the Lincoln Detox program? And what does this mean for the NADA community today?

About the Speakers

Tatsuo Hirano has been involved with the healing arts for over 45 years. He visited Lincoln Detox in the early 1970s and received his initial acupuncture training at BAAANA Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in New York City.

Franklin Apfel was a member of the medical doctors collective at Lincoln Detox and an important factor in the initial research into using acupuncture for research at the program. He was a member of Students for a Democratic Society and later became a founder of Doctors without Borders.

More speakers TBA.

More about the Event & History Series #NADAFullCircle

Over the course of 2021 we are exploring questions of how we got to where we are today and the stories we’ve told and not told about NADA’s origins. We held our first event, ‘Setting the Scene’ in March 2021. The series will be a space for community dialogue, connection, and healing. Our goal is to have a more complete understanding of NADA’s roots and legacy. With a more conscious awareness of these origins, we can intentionally fulfill our mission of making the NADA protocol available and accessible to all as a tool for community building, healing, and liberation.

In the last session, Johanna Fernández led a conversation with Walter Bosque and Carlos Alvarez about the development of the NADA protocol in the 1970s at Lincoln Detox. This brought us to the important year of 1978, which is the focus of our next conversation.

On November 19th, we’ll bring together a group of special guests to discuss what led to the closure of Lincoln Detox in 1978, removal of activists from the program, and what this history and revolutionary visions might mean today.
